Racing at Warnambool today and we’re back to wet tracks again however I have found two runners today that have the webbed feet to do the job.

Plus, to round off the third leg for a solid Patent Bet today, we head north to sunny Mackay where I have found what should be a good thing to collect the cash on a good track.

WARNAMBOOL  (Weather: Showery    Track: Heavy 10)

With the rail out eight metres for the entire circuit and a penetrometer reading of 6.6, barriers won’t play a huge role in race outcomes today.

Race 7.  Ponting Bros Hcp (BM64) 2047m

Already littered with scratchings, it leaves a field of nine to contest this BM64 for stayers. A fine line of chances here but the Dan O’Sullivan trained FINE EMBERS stands out to me.

The six-year-old gelding has already clocked up some experience over the distance including two wins from his last two starts over the trip.

He is a well seasoned horse who has had a long campaign this time in however, his races have been well spaced, keeping him reasonably fresh between races. His form has come of age lately and it seems to have improved since he hit the heavy tracks.

His first run on heavy going in more than a year saw him finish second in a BM58 at Donald in a raised weights race. He carried a massive 70 kgs and coming from near last on the turn, was beaten just 1.25 lengths.

He then headed to Murtoa where he was met by another heavy track and a BM58 field over 2050m. Starting slowly again, he worked his way into a mid-field position and carrying 60.5kgs finished too well for his rivals to win in what was a slowly run race.

Four weeks later he took on a BM64 at Echuca where the heavy track that day proved to be an asset for him as he settled just behind the pace and finished best again to hold out the odds-on favourite and win by half a length.

His last two starts were run in stark contrast to his usual racing style however it seemed to have no effect on his ability to finish off both races. Coincidently he was ridden on both occasions by Ryan Maloney who retains the mount today.

Being used to carrying big weights, the 61kgs today shouldn’t be too big an issue for him and the heavy track today should see him prove very hard to beat in this company, having already won in BM64 class.

Of the other runners, the eight-year-old, Tons Of Dash could prove a nuisance with his liking for wet tracks and is a winner here as well. Another eight-year-old in Finley Harper could also give a bold showing at the weights.

Race 8.  R & M Security Services Hcp (BM70) 1700m

In just his third campaign, ROBBIE’S STAR has really shown his ability and what could be yet ahead of him. In his six starts since returning to the track, he has missed the placings only twice, and finished a close up fourth on both of those occasions.

He has not seen a dry track since returning, and is two and one from three starts on heavy tracks this prep. The Shinzig gelding has really taken a liking to the wet tracks of late.

He first encountered a heavy track four starts back, here in a BM58 over the 1700m trip where carrying 60kgs he got the job done. His next start saw him take on BM64 class for the first time at Bendigo where he wasn’t disgraced in finishing second to Calibrate beaten half a length.

After a four week freshen-up he travelled to Bendigo and with new jockey, Damian Lane aboard, made his BM64 rivals look second rate as he streeted the field over the mile trip to win by a staggering six lengths carrying 59kgs.

His last start saw him in BM70 class for the first time and at Sandown, found the 1800m and the long Sandown straight just a bit too much, finishing fourth but not disgraced beaten just 1.75 lengths.

Today, he’s back on his home track, back to 1700m and winning jockey, Damian Lane returns to take the ride. At the weights, and on form, he represents great value.

Challenges could come from topweight, Woolsthorpe Store who is in winning form and is a track and distance winner. The six-year-old Blevic gelding has also won four of six on heavy tracks, worth bearing in mind.

Decoupez is also locally trained and is coming off a good second in BM70 class at Sandown, beaten a head.

MACKAY  (Weather: Fine    Track: Good 4)

Some light showers are forecast today for the heart of cane cutting country but even if they arrive, it will have no bearing on the Good 4 track today.

Race 4.  MTC Racing Awards Hcp  (BM70) 1300m

In what appears to be a race in two, I believe will end up being a one horse affair.

Fourth-up today and off a last start victory, the locally trained MISHANI VIKING gets my vote here.

After a mixed campaign down south, local trainer, John Manzelmann spelled the gelding for four months before returning him to the track in June. First-up, he went around on the Sunshine Coast where he finished third in a Class Three over 1200m.

He then journeyed south to the Gold Coast where the 1400m and BM65 class saw him a bit short on the soft track, finishing seventh after never getting hot during the race.

Then, returning home to Mackay, Manzelmann gave the five-year-old a four week freshen-up before returning to the track where he took on a Class Three field over the 1300m trip.

Back home, on a dry track, he showed his true potential and at his third start back, ran his rivals ragged winning by a length with Sonja Wiseman aboard. The runner-up jockey that day, Chelsea Jokic must have been impressed with his performance as she has taken the mount for today’s race. Ironically, Chelsea will be the 11th jockey to sit on his back in his last 11 starts.

The obvious danger will be another locally trained horse, Jewellery Thief who is also an experienced track winner boating four wins from nine starts here.

The Murtajill mare could prove to be a real pest if she gets her way just off the pace.

Also look for a bold performance from Prince Dan first-up today. He has also shown a liking to the 1300m at Mackay and has placed three of four first-up efforts.
