In-Play betting tips – expert guide to betting live and In-Play

Do you wait for kick-off before placing your football bets?

Punters have never had so much choice when it comes to placing bets. A few years ago, a handful of bookies started offering customers the chance to place a wager during half-time of a football match, although you can now place bets from the moment a game kicks off to the moment the referee blows the final whistle.

The same applies across lots of other sports, with tennis, cricket and golf also popular from an In-Play betting point-of-view, while horse racing punters can also access live odds with their favourite bookmaker, although some races can be over pretty quickly.

How to bet In-Play
Naturally, you need to have an online betting account with a bookmaker such as bet365, Ladbrokes or Paddy Power. Then it’s a case of logging in with your username and password before accessing the latest In-Play markets and odds.

It helps to bet on a sporting event that you are watching, whether it is on television or being live streamed by a particular bookmaker. This will help you make informed decisions when it comes to the live markets available.

The actual placement of an In-Play bet works much in the same way as a pre-event bet, with the customer clicking on the odds and selecting a particular stake. There is usually a few seconds time delay before the bet is accepted due to the fact that the odds are changing all the time according to what is happening on the field of play.

What are the best sports for In-Play betting?
Football is extremely popular, with customers having the chance to bet on the match winner, team / player to score the next goal and the final score of the match. You can choose to strike a bet during the first half or second half, with some people preferring to wait until half-time to make a considered wager at the latest odds available.

Cricket also affords lots of exciting In-Play betting opportunities whether it’s the Test Match format or Twenty20 cricket. A five-day Test Match means that more bets are placed after the action has started than beforehand, with lots of time to place wagers over the five days of cricket.

The same applies to a golf tournament, with a four-day event meaning that you can start off by betting on First Round Leader and other similar markets, while the Tournament Winner market is live throughout the four days. There is often hole-to-hole betting available so you can back Tiger Woods to birdie, par or bogey the 18th.

Bet In-Play on whether Tiger Woods will birdie each hole.

How can I make money from In-Play betting?
There are customers who make a profit from live wagering and the key thing is to place bets on the sporting events which you are most knowledgeable about. This should give you a stronger chance of making money.

Some people will choose to place In-Play bets with a fixed-odds bookmaker, although sports betting exchanges offer the flexibility of being able to cash out a profit without waiting for a market to be settled. So if you think a golfer’s price is going to contract as the tournament progresses, you can take a big In-Play price and hope to lay at shorter odds.

The key thing is to be selective with the bets you place. Naturally, the bookies have a margin when it comes to Correct Score and Asian Handicap markets, so there is little point placing a flurry of bets as you will come away with a small loss even if you get half of your predictions correct.
