Chris Waller discusses his Melbourne Cup runners

Chris Waller discusses his three Melbourne Cup runners heading into Tuesday’s $6.2 million Group 1 feature event.

The champion trainer collected his first Cox Plate in October and now he is chasing his first Melbourne Cup (3200m) when he saddles up Who Shot Thebarman ($18 with Luxbet), Preferment ($10) and Grand Marshal ($41).

Who Shot Thebarman is the proven two-miler for Waller and the Rosehill horseman believes he represents the best value of his trio of runners in the Melbourne Cup.

“He’s great value,” Waller told
“His form is coming through the right races, he’s just that little bit stronger and he’s the benchmark of my horses.
“He ran third in the race last year and you quite often see that form repeating and he’s still in his prime.”

Preferment enters the Melbourne Cup on the back of a ninth-placed effort in the Cox Plate (2040m). He was beaten 12.65 lengths by stablemate Winx who broke the Moonee Valley track record.

Waller is happy with the way Preferment pulled up from his Cox Plate run and expects the four-year-entire to run out a strong two miles with his 53.5kg.

“He’s come through the race very well and I’m pleased with his form,” Waller said.
“We think running in the Cox Plate deserves enough respect alone, let alone worrying about where he finished.
“He’s really coming to his peak now – he’s by Zabeel, he’s got a good draw, a good jockey aboard, he’s got 53.5kg – there’s just so many good factors to suggest he could win a Melbourne Cup.”

Grand Marshal defeated Who Shot Thebarman in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) and Waller said a top 10 finish or better would be a good result.

“He did beat Who Shot Thebarman in the Sydney Cup,” he said.
“Admittedly it was on a wet track but gee he was strong at the end of the two miles.
“That’s going to be a big key in sorting half the field out probably. Some will get a strong two miles and have a bit of speed and some won’t.
“I think he could easily fit into the top 10 and hopefully go a little better than that.”
